Canary Spring - Mammoth Hot Springs

This picture was taken of Canary Springs, one of the Springs that make up Mammoth Hot Springs, located near the North entrance of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.  Mammoth Hot Springs was created over thousands of years ago, as hot water from numerous springs cooled and deposited calcium carbonate shown in photo.  Most of these Hot Waters came from what is called the Norris Geyser Basin through an underground fault line.  The limestone from rock formations along the fault line is the source of the calcium carbonate.  These superheated waters then surface through Mammoth around 170F.  Algae living in the warm waters then tint the travertine to shades of brown, orange, red and green.  Isn't nature fascinating, I love it!
