Golden Dome

This picture was taken of the Golden Dome located on the University of Notre Dame Campus in South Bend, Indiana.  This building, actually the third to stand at this site, was built in 1879 the same year the previous one was destroyed by fire.  The Golden Dome was added in 1882 and was most recently regilded in 2005.  This regilding process uses just a fist-ful of gold leaf for the entire dome.  Standing atop of the Dome is a statue of Mary which stands 19 feet tall and weighs over 4000 pounds.  Quite an awesome site as one can see!
